Ok, we all know there’s really more than one thing that you need for leadership development or to be successful in business. But today I want to highlight one word that can help make all the difference—EFFORT.
What is effort?
Let me be clear, I’m talking about real effort. Not the kind of effort that your kids make when you tell them to clean up their bedroom but they really want to be doing just about anything else.
The Merriam Webster Dictionary definitions of effort include:
- conscious exertion of power : hard work
- a serious attempt
- something produced by exertion or trying
- the total work done to achieve a particular end
Look at the words used to describe effort: hard work, serious, exertion, total work done. This is the type of effort that I’m talking about.
This word makes all the difference. Why? Because if you put forth effort it requires you to become a little more intentional. And when you get intentional about something, it demands your attention. This can bring about motivation to learn new things, seek out help, get creative, and explore the possibilities.
Effort is what opens the door for everything else that’s waiting for you.
You need to put forth effort
It doesn’t matter how much money you throw at leadership development training or business coaching programs if you’re not willing to make the effort and do the work. In the year 2020, there is no shortage of information available to you. If you have access to a digital device and the internet, than you can find the answers to most of your questions.
But while knowledge plays a role in success, it’s not the only thing you need. You can know everything there is to know, but if you don’t do it then none of it’s going to matter.
Effort is what makes all that knowledge that you have worth anything.
What if you don’t know what effort needs to be made?
This is a legitimate question. And if you don’t know what to do, it can be tempting to not do anything. But remember, when you make a real effort in an area, it helps you find a way. In fact, that might be why you’re reading this right now.
Maybe you’re searching for the key to business success and leadership development because you desire to improve in these area. You’re making an effort to find solutions to your problem.
