6 Tips for Setting Your Team Up for Success


Every leader wants to have a successful team. And when you feel like your team isn’t successful, it can be a little too easy to think that it’s because of the people on your team. But success starts at the top. If you want your team to be successful, you have to learn how to be a successful leader. These 6 tips can help.

1. Encourage your team to ask questions

You’ve probably heard the saying “there’s no such thing as a stupid question” but do you believe it? And does your team believe it? You may be surprised to find out how many questions your newer employees have that they’re afraid to ask because they don’t want to be dumb.

As a leader, you have to fight this. Encourage everyone on the team to ask questions. Let them know that asking questions is a great way to grow and learn and that it shows you, as the leader, that they are active in their role.

2. Encourage vulnerability and authenticity

You want your team members to know that it’s OK for them to be real. It’s OK for them to be vulnerable. Helping them reframe their mindsets around “failure” can help make this happen. If your employees are afraid to fail then it’s likely they will struggle to be both vulnerable and authentic.

Help them see how they can realign their failure and turn them into successes. Let them know that as the leader, you have their back. This means you need to be doing the same thing as well.

3. Remember that respect has to be earned

This is a lesson that applies to business and life. Respect needs to be earned. You may want respect from your team, but if you’re not acting in a respectable way, they are not going to truly respect you. And that’s on you, not them. Being a leader that your team can respect is one of the most important things that you can do to help lead them to success.

Follow through on what you say you’re going to do. Admit when you’re wrong and apologize when needed. Be consistent. Get in the trenches with your team. If you’re expecting them to work long hours but you’re headed home at 5pm every day, it won’t take long for them to lose respect for you. Don’t ask your team to do anything that you wouldn’t do yourself.

4. Provide leadership opportunities

Help your employees grow and develop. Provide them ways to take on new opportunities. Not every employee may be interested in leading, but if you have a strong employee, they’re going to want to try new things. They’re going to want to have opportunities to continue to grow. If you refuse to bring people up in the ranks under you, it’s likely that they’re going to get discouraged.

5. Make sure their values connect

We’ve mentioned this before, but one of the best ways to get buy-in from your employees is to help them see how their values and goals connect to those of your organization. Encourage your employees to discover what their true core values are if they don’t know. then, help them see where those values fit within your organization. If they don’t, then they’re not likely to be happy in their role for very long.

The employees that are passionate about their job and what your organization stands for are the ones that are going to be the happiest and most successful.

6. Promote self-leadership

Don’t be the dictator of your organization. Part of building a successful team is getting the right people in place where they can lead themselves at times too. When you delegate a project or task to someone on your team, make sure you also delegate the decision making authority that goes along with it. Don’t make them come running to you for permission on anything. And let them know that if something goes wrong or if they have questions, you’re there for them, but that you trust them in their role as well.
