Why We Love Monday and How You Can Too

Mondays

It’s Monday! Do those words put fear in you? Does a sense of dread start to creep in on Saturday night because you know that you only have one day left to enjoy the weekend? If you feel like this, you are not alone.  Hop on social media on Sunday and Monday and you will quickly notice that people do not like Mondays. But, I have a secret—I love Mondays. Let me tell you why and how you can too.

Love what you do

I used to hate Mondays, but that’s when I didn’t enjoy the job I was doing. When you hate being at work the last thing you want to do is give up the weekend and head to work on Monday. But, once I started to like the work I was doing Mondays became just another day of the week. If you don’t like what you do there are two options for you:

  1. Find a new job that you do enjoy.
  2. Change your mindset. Look for things that you enjoy in your job and focus on the positive.

Enjoy a fresh start

I actually look forward to Mondays now. By Thursday and Friday my to-do list is catching up with me a little and I have to spend some time reprioritizing my tasks. But, once Monday rolls along it’s a fresh start to a new week. It gives me a renewed energy. Not accomplishing my to-do list each day used to be a bad experience for me. I felt like a failure if I couldn’t check all the boxes off of my list for the day. But, once I learned that failure is something to learn from and not be afraid of (SPEARity™ coaches are great at helping you realize this) everything changed!

Know what you are working on

Monday can be overwhelming if you have no idea what you are going to be doing. But, once you have written goals that are broken up into easy-to-accomplish tasks life isn’t so hard. If you spend time planning the upcoming week on Friday, you can walk away from the job and enjoy the weekend. Sunday night doesn’t bring that feeling of panic and overwhelm because you know where your focus is going to be the next day. Here are a few tips to get you started:

  • Set SMART goals
  • Break each goal down into the small action steps that you need to take
  • Prioritize these tasks
  • Assign them to your calendar
  • Track your progress on a regular basis

Using the SPEARity™ app is an easy way to accomplish all of these steps. You can also access the app from any device with internet access making it easy to stay on top of your goals.

Review your plan

A common mistake that people make is setting goals, developing a plan, and then forgetting about it. A plan that is not being monitored and adapted as needed is not going to be successful. If I write out a list of New Year’s resolutions and then tuck it in a desk drawer for the year the chances of me accomplishing my goals is most likely 0%. But, if I spend just a few minutes a day reviewing my list and tracking my progress the chance of me achieving my goals is going to skyrocket.

The same is true with your plans for work. If you spend the first 15 minutes of the day (or the last 15 minutes of the day before) reviewing and adjusting your plan you will make progress towards your goals. Accomplishing goals feels good, which means you are more likely to be motivated to get to work on Monday.
